Our Hospital: Figtree Private Hospital History

Figtree Private Hospital History

Alpha Healthcare Limited acquired the Health Care Corporation Hospitals in August 1997. Figtree Private Hospital (formerly Illawarra Private Hospital) at this time was under a $9 million dollar refurbishment program which included: Surgical and Post Natal accommodation – these areas had already been commissioned earlier in 1997.

Post Natal services were available at the hospital so the addition of 3 delivery suites and a Level 2 special care nursery completed Maternity Services.

The refurbishment was officially opened in March 1998.

In August 2001 Ramsay Health Care acquired all of the Alpha facilities, including Figtree Private. Since Ramsay Health Care took over the reins, the hospital has moved from strength to strength. During this time Figtree Private Hospital has maintained the status of the leading provider of private health care in the region. The Federal Government’s 30% rebate on private health insurance saw an increase in our business in 2001/2002, and the hospital has managed to maintain this high quality care with the growth in business today.

Illawarra Private Hospital was renamed Figtree Private on 15th September 2004. This name change was due to the local community referring to the hospital as 'Figtree'. The hospital has recently undergone a major refurbishment of the front foyer and façade in line with this name change. There have also been plans developed for further improvements and enhancements to the hospital. 2005 saw the refurbishment of the medical ward, the post-natal wards, the central sterilisation department and the kitchen.
